The song is a classical hit and basically outlines the agony that people go through whenever they are in love with a person but cannot find the courage to tell them.

The first verse of the song gives us a glimpse into the world of dilemma. We are introduced to the heartache that a person goes through when he sees the woman he loves with another man. We are told that the guy feels like dying whenever he sees the other man taking the hand of his object of desires. He is full of jealous and can’t understand why the lady can’t look at him the way he looks at him, why he can’t be with her.

As the title of the song implies, I wish is basically an expression of regret, an expression of the agony that a boy has to go through every time he sees the woman she loves happy with another person. It explains the agony that the guy has to go through every time he tries to communicate his feelings to his object of desire. The second verse clearly explains the pain and agony that the guy goes through. Every time he tries to express his feelings, be becomes dumbfounded, he cannot utter a single word and every time he is near her, his heart races.

Every time he sees the woman she loves slow dancing with another man, he becomes distraught and heartbroken. He secretly wishes that he could be the one in the shoes of the man. That he could be the one providing her with so much happiness, the one who would kiss her and hold her in her arms. Unfortunately, all this is a wish and a pipe dream.

The guy expresses how it eats him up every he sees her happy. He believes that he would love her better and secretly wishes that he was the one in the place of the other guy. He has been yearning to tell her three words but has never gotten the chance. This is because every time he is near her, he becomes blank. He cannot bring herself to telling those three beautiful words to her. As such, he has been relegated to wishing, hoping and praying for a miracle. Wishing that he would one day gather courage to tell her how much he feels for her.

I wish by one direction is a song that is dedicated towards those people who love but don’t have the courage to communicate their feelings. It therefore gives them hope that they are not alone, that this situation is bound to happen every once in a while. On the brighter side however, a person can dedicate this song to a person whom they secretly admire to communicate the message that they found difficult communicating by themselves.
